Air Fryer Salmon and Asparagus
Air fryer salmon and asparagus is the 17-minute dinner that makes you wonder why you ever turned on the oven for fish. The asparagus goes into the basket first, the seasoned salmon goes on top skin-side down, and 10 to 12 minutes later you have flaky, slightly crisp-exterior salmon over tender asparagus with charred tips. One basket, no flipping, no separate pots, ~38 grams of protein per serving. This is the weeknight meal that’s as simple as it gets without eating something sad.
The air fryer does something for salmon that the oven can’t do in this time window: the circulating heat cooks the fish evenly from all sides simultaneously, which means the salmon stays moist inside while developing a lightly caramelized exterior on the flesh side. The oven at 400°F gets you there in about 12 to 15 minutes. The air fryer at 400°F gets you there in 10 to 12 with a better surface texture.
The Temperature Question
Pull the salmon at 130°F to 135°F internal temperature, not the USDA-recommended 145°F. Medium salmon — slightly translucent in the very center, fully opaque from the outside — is moist, rich, and deeply flavorful. Well-done salmon at 145°F is noticeably drier and loses some of the omega-3 rich fat that makes it both delicious and worth eating from a nutrition standpoint. The difference of 10 to 15 degrees matters more for salmon than almost any other protein. A meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the fillet is the right tool here — guessing by appearance alone is harder than it sounds.
Why the Asparagus Goes First
Asparagus in the bottom of the basket serves two purposes. First, it forms a natural elevated rack that allows air to circulate under the salmon skin while the skin protects the bottom of the fillet. Second, the asparagus needs slightly more time than the salmon to develop proper char — adding it first and letting it run the full cook time without the salmon on top produces better results than adding both simultaneously. Once the asparagus is in and spread out, the salmon goes directly on top and everything runs for the same 10 to 12 minutes together.
The Protein Case
Approximately 38 grams per serving from the salmon fillet, with asparagus adding another 4 grams. Salmon is one of the most complete protein sources available — it provides all essential amino acids alongside significant omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and B12. For a high-protein meal that takes under 20 minutes with one tool to clean, this is the most efficient dinner on the site. For other salmon recipes to rotate through, the Cajun Air Fryer Salmon and Honey Sriracha Salmon cover the same protein in completely different flavor directions.
Storage
Salmon keeps for 2 days in the fridge. Reheat at 50% microwave power for 90 seconds rather than full power — low and slow prevents the fish from overcooking further. Cold leftover salmon flaked over a salad with lemon vinaigrette is also an excellent next-day lunch that requires no reheating.

Air Fryer Salmon and Asparagus
Ingredients
Meat & Protein
- 2 salmon fillets 6 oz each, skin-on, patted dry
Produce
- 1 bunch asparagus tough ends trimmed — about 1 lb
- 3 garlic cloves minced
- 1 lemon half juiced for salmon, half cut into wedges for serving
Pantry & Canned Goods
- 1.5 tbsp olive oil divided — 1 tbsp for salmon, ½ tbsp for asparagus
Seasonings & Spices
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp kosher salt divided
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 3 minutes.
- Toss the trimmed asparagus with ½ tbsp olive oil and ¼ tsp kosher salt. Arrange in an even layer in the air fryer basket.
- Pat the salmon fillets completely dry with paper towels. Rub the flesh side with 1 tbsp olive oil, the minced garlic, lemon juice, smoked paprika, garlic powder, remaining ¼ tsp kosher salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Place the salmon skin-side down on top of the asparagus.
- Air fry at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes, until the salmon flakes easily with a fork and reaches an internal temperature of 130°F to 135°F for medium, and the asparagus is tender with lightly charred tips. Do not flip the salmon — it cooks through from the circulating heat on all sides.
- Remove carefully and serve immediately with lemon wedges for squeezing over the top.
